1 In other words, "settlement," of the colonial kind. However, the word Jojo's used here is specific to concessions in China, territories run by foreign governments. Further reading. This term (specifically, in conjunction with Shinjuku) is also used in SUCCUBUS as a setting.

2 After Japan's surrender in World War II, Allied forces (largely American) occupied Japan, from 1945-1952. It's natural that there would be some resentment towards the soldiers, as they were the enemy during the war. Further reading.

3 Jojo uses the kanji for "cheap liquor" but makes a clever pun here by singing "bombs" -- aside from the wartime implication, the Japanese word for "bomb" is also slang for alcohol-and-liqueur cocktails.

4 Note to non-native English speakers: "rock bottom" is an idiom that means that someone's life is about as bad as it can get. The Japanese translates more directly to "the bottom of poor," or the poorest or most meager someone could be. In short, the narrator of this song is not in a good place in life.

5 Keishuu NEWS was a newspaper that published technical data and predictions for horse races in southern Kanto. The newspaper launched in 1938, and relaunched in 1946 after the war (as newspapers were suspended during WWII).

6 "Great Tokyo" ("Dai-Tokyo") seems to have been a patriotic way of referring to Tokyo as the capitol of Japan (which was at the time known as the Great Empire of Japan) before the end of WWII.

7 In writing, the word used is "gigolo" but the sung word is okama, a slang or derogatory name for a gay man.

8 Philopon is the trademarked name for methamphetamine in Japan which came into use during WWII, before effects of the drug were well-studied. After the government released its military stockpile into circulation, it was increasingly blamed for violent crimes and was banned in 1951
